Millennium Telecom, a joint venture company of two telecom PSUs Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has floated a Rs 1,600-crore (Rs 16-billion) tender to lay a submarine cable between India and South East Asia, the landing station for which would be located in West Bengal. "The cable landing station for this cable would be set up at Digha in West Bengal," the department of telecommunication has informed the state government.

Cable operators issued a 48-hour ultimatum to authorities to lift the ban on four Pak channels -- Geo, ARY, PTV and Aaj -- or they would suspend their operation in the Valley. The authorities said the ban order was issued on the directions from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The cable operators, in retaliation, stopped airing Indian or foreign channel, including sports channels.

According to the estimates prepared by CASBAA, India will require about $12-15 billion investments to upgrade its analogue cable set to digital. At present, India's digital cable reach is less than 20%. Currently, there are about 71 million cable homes in the country out of a total of about 130 million television homes. But only about 6% cable homes are digital. With only 3% broadband penetration, India ranks very low in comparison to countries like Brazil, China & Thailand.
